Day by Day Extention

Day 1

A flight from Quito or Guayaquil will connect you with your Galapagos adventure. You land on the island of Baltra where you meet the yacht staff and drive from Baltra airport to the Itabaca Channel where the Encantada is waiting for you.   Then a short cruise to the north side of Santa Cruz Island for your first visit to Bachas Beach.

We return to the boat in our dinghy to enjoy sunset over the Galapagos.  At night, sailing to Plazas Islands.

Day 2

Plazas Island is a small island with steep cliffs.  We transfer by dingy to the shore to walk along a well-marked trail, passing cactus and a number of iguanas, both land and sea and a big colony of sea lions.

After our visit we return to the boat and cruise to Santa Fe Island, located roughly halfway between Santa Cruz and San Cristobal islands.  There is a small and picturesque bay here where we drop anchor and then head to shore to walk.  It is an island replete with prickly pear cactus and an endemic land iguana population.

Day 3

In the morning finds us at San Cristobal Island. Isla Lobos and/or Kicker Rock with caminata & snorkel . Our first stop is Leon Dormido or Kicker Rock that juts from the sea in geologic splendor.   It’s a fantastic place to snorkel, swimming through a passage between the rocks.  Colorful sea stars dot the walls, hundreds of brilliant fish swim by and we often see rays, sharks and sea turtles.

After lunch, we continue on to the port town of Puerto Baquerizo Moreno.  Over a hundred years ago this town started out as a penal colony.  Today it has a lovely waterfront where sea lions lounge.  Our highlight is the excellent National Park Interpretation Center which provides an overview to the Park’s natural and human history.

Day 4

Disembark in Española Island where wildlife is truly a highlight of this island and the best-known star: waved albatross. From January to March they leave the islands to feed along the mainland of Ecuador, so if you are planning to spot them ask for a departure during breeding season! There are plenty of other animals and birds to see nevertheless.

From Suarez Point we cruise to Gardner Bay for an afternoon of more exploration.  There’s a lovely beach here as well as good snorkeling.  With any luck you snorkel with sea turtles, sea lions and naturally, dozens of colorful fish.

Day 5

An overnight cruise takes us to Floreana Island and a stop at the famous Post Office Bay where 18th century whalers left messages in a wooden barrel as an unofficial mail box.

We return to the sea and cruise to Punta Cormorant where we go ashore for a wonderful walk along a sandy beach and visit a lagoon where pink flamingoes along with other shore birds wade and feed.

We then continue to the small islet called “Champion” which is considered one of the top snorkeling spots in all the islands.  With masks and fins you explore an underwater world and are likely to be snorkeling with sea turtles, many colorful reef fish, white-tipped reef sharks and possibly even Galapagos penguins.

Back on board the Encantada we enjoy the sunset and dinner.  Later in the night the engines start for a cruise north to Santa Cruz Island.

Day 6

We wake up in the harbor of Puerto Ayora on the island of Santa Cruz, the largest town in the Galapagos Islands.  A short walk takes us to the Charles Darwin Research Station and an opportunity to learn more about conservation work in the Galapagos.

After Lunch, we will take the Public speedboat to Isabela (14:00), which lasts approximately two and a half hours. After arriving at Isabela, we will take a brief rest at the hotel and then head to the Concha de Perla lagoon, where you can swim with sea lions, colorful varieties of fish, and with luck sea turtles. Lodging at The Wooden House Lodge.

Day 7

Early in the morning (8:00 am aprox.), we will prepare ourselves for the Sierra Negra Volcano hike by putting on comfortable clothes, making sure our cameras are stored in waterproof bags and to bring sunscreen, water, and hats, and finally by preparing our box lunch at the hotel to take with us. We will then travel approximately 45 minutes by truck or bus to begin the 12 km hike (appx. 3 hours). The hike is long, but not very difficult as the inclines and declines are quite gradual. Sierra Negra Volcano has the second largest crater in the world, measuring approximately 6 miles in diameter and 300 feet deep. We will reach Volcan Chico before heading back, which should provide a spectacular view of the incredible moonlike terrain.

We will make our way to the dock of Puerto Villamil in order to embark on small speedboats that have a capacity of 12 passengers each. After a short ride (appx. 20 min.) we will arrive at Tintoreras Islet. The name of the islet derives from the sharks that live in the waters surrounding. In this one area we can see sea lions, marine iguanas, blue-footed boobies, Sally Lightfoot Crabs, sea turtles, pelicans, and Galapagos Penguins. After the hike through the islet, we will get back on the boat and cool off by snorkeling in the waters nearby, where we can see multicolor fish, starfish, sea-urchins, and with luck manta rays, sharks, and sea lions that may swim with us close up. After this fascinating experience we will return to the hotel for dinner.

Day 8

Sunday at 5:00 a.m. we will prepare ourselves to go to the dock (wake-up at 4:30 AM). We will take the Public speedboat, which leaves at 6:00 a.m. (subject to change), From Isabela to Puerto Ayora (2 hour and a half estimated travel time) and then to Baltra for Transfer Out. End of our services.
